The Kentucky Derby’s coming this weekend, and that means it’s time for a mint julep.
This traditional bourbon drink was popular well before its official designation more than 80 years ago as the drink of the derby and has seen a few variations since its rise to popularity in the 19th century.
This year, the team at Hard Truth has put together three versions featuring rye whiskies for you to sip as you watch the run for the roses, fancy hats optional.
#1: Classic Mint Julep
We’re starting off with a classic mint julep recipe featuring Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey, sugar, and mint. Keep in mind — while any ice’ll get it cold, crushed ice is recommended for juleps.
INGREDIENTS:
2 oz. Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey
1 tsp. Sugar
6 Mint leaves
1 Mint sprig, to garnish
CRAFT:
1. Add mint leaves and sugar to julep cup, and muddle gently.
2. Top with rye whiskey, then crushed ice.
3. Smack mint sprig to release oils, place in drink to garnish, and serve.
#2: Peach Tea Mint Julep
This take on the mint julep exchanges sugar with peach tea, adding a light fruitiness to the mix that also features by Hard Truth Indiana Rye Whiskey and, of course, mint.
INGREDIENTS:
2 oz. Hard Truth Indiana Rye Whiskey
1 oz. Peach tea
6 Mint leaves, to muddle
1 Mint sprig, to garnish
CRAFT:
1. Add mint leaves to julep cup, and muddle gently.
2. Add liquid ingredients to cup, then top generously with crushed ice.
3. Smack mint sprig to release oils, place in drink to garnish, and serve.
#3: Rose Mint Julep
A touch of rose water adds a delicately earthy, light floral element to this mint julep. With honey for sweetness and a backbone of Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye, this refreshing sip around the track is a lovely way to celebrate the big race.

2 oz. Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye Whiskey
½ oz. Honey
¼ oz. Rose water
6 Mint leaves
1 Mint sprig, to garnish
CRAFT:
1. Add mint leaves and honey to julep cup, and muddle gently.
2. Add remaining liquid ingredients, then top generously with crushed ice.
